The Imo State University community in Owerri was on Tuesday thrown into mourning when a final year student of the varsity on his way to the school for the ongoing first semester examination was killed by a truck.
According to Eyewitnesses who spoke to PUNCH correspondent, the student was crushed to death by a truck with number plate, Ebonyi XD 520 AKL, at about 7.50am, at IMSU Junction, not far from the campus.
It was gathered that the trailer, which was coming into town from the Okigwe-Owerri Expressway, had brakes failure and killed the student, who had allegedly jumped from a tricycle out of fear.
One of the sources said;
“The truck driver was shouting to alert people that the truck had brakes failure. The student, who was in a tricycle that faced the truck, jumped out, but he was eventually killed by the truck.”
The spokesperson for the police in the state, Andrew Enwerem, confirmed the accident, but said he had yet to get the details.
The IMSU Public Relations Officer, Obi Njoku, told PUNCH correspondent on the telephone that the victim had yet to be identified.
